Theme / Description Themes of social activism and justice are examined through the lens of both the current and the historic; across the medium of photography, sculpture, installation, video, painting and mixed media.

I-THOU, is named so for Martin Buber’s book Ich und Du. Like Buber, this exhibition explores humanity’s relationships to one another on both an individual, and societal level. We seek to visually explore these concepts on what it means to other. Othering, as defined as: to view or treat (a person or group of people) as intrinsically different from and alien to oneself, is considered by Tinnen to be the root cause of the ways in which we allow, justify and facilitate systems of control.
Timeline Contemporary.
Type of ART Photo
Class connection? You were part of the show. This show can give people inspiration of different photographers. The show will also give us ways of developing artistic taste and details.
Piece you like I enjoyed Liam Alexander's art work. I like the use of collage that he used with the also the use of photos.
What you like I like the images in the Past Exhibitions, "My Muse"
Piece you don't like Ben Altman because his website is not user friendly.
Why not? His website is really bad.

Title Isolated
Artist if solo show or performance Joan Lobis Brown
Theme / Description The was based off of Polar Bears in the Arctic and how endangered they are. This showed their actions, their habitat, and them in their natural state. This was a single artist, even thought the title "Isolated" has several sections within the Isolated show. This part of the show, they artist had to travel to photograph these Polar Bears in their habitat.
Timeline Contemporary
Type of ART The style of art was Photography. For The Arctic part of the Isolation gallery, it was mainly focused on Wildlife and Landscape Photography.
Class connection? Since our photo one class is more focused on learning techniques of our camera a shooting various things, we have not covered Wildlife yet. It mostly relates to the period. It is contemporary and new photography, like we use everyday. Which is one main reason it connects to class.
Piece you like I like the first piece of work in the Arctic portion of Isolation. It is untitled, but it is the image of a Polar Bear finding food under the ice.
What you like It attracted my attention because it shows the Polar Bear and its surroundings. Your eye can focus on various parts such as depth of field, rule of thirds, and the composition of the photograph. It also attracted me because it shows the bear in its natural routine, finding food or water. I really love the image and how it captures every surrounding.
Piece you don't like Some of the landscape images throughout The Arctic shoot.
Why not? Some of these images, such as image 6 in the slide show of images. It shows very little and does not attract my attention as much as the others. It has good composition, but is a very bland and boring image overall.
Artist Intent / Message The artists message and intent was to show how Polar Bears behave and how their habitat is changing right before their eyes. The artist mentioned that she does not want these images to become a memory, she wants Polar Bears to survive. The only way to do this is to prevent global warming as much as possible and create more chances for Polar Bears. Because as a photographer myself, I want to go into the wildlife aspect, and I want to be able to do what she does and see Polar Bears face to face, not in old photographs.

Look From all of the pictures that I could see, the show appeared to be well lit. There were lots of people in the photos, so I would assume that there would be chatter all around you. I like the way that the walls act as dividers for certain works, instead of all of the pieces arranged on the walls of one big space. For a show this size it looks like it added interest and kept a nice flow in the rooms.

Theme / Description This is a group show, full of dialogue. This is a special show, not a part of a museum collection. Pamela Jean Tinnen curated it.
Timeline Contemporary (All of the artists are currently making work still)
Type of ART This was primarily photography-- the styles all varied, and were altered in some ways. I believe at least one artist had sculpture there (Claire Lieberman).
Class connection? Style is where this show connects the most with our class. I found it easy to relate to the style which some of the artists used. It made me think about my own personal style and preference in taking photographs.
Piece you like Sheri Lynn Behr's work was one of my favorites, particularly in her series, "Watching You." There were not titles with the images on her site that I saw, but one image in particular I found appealing. On the main page when you click on the link for her name, I hit the "Right" arrow and it was the third photo. Depicted is an abstracted surveillance camera in the top third of the page. There are lines and curves from what appears to possibly be the ceiling. The light source is clearly from the left side.
What you like I love her abstract style. The way that Behr creates an artistic image out of an every day object is wonderful. I love the composition the most I think. The contrast in her photos is inspiring, especially with the dramatic lighting. It makes me want to choose something that we see or use every day, like doorknobs, and photograph them in a way that wouldn't scream "doorknob" at you. I like that her work makes you think, especially after reading her artist statement. The concept behind her work is very interesting, and not something that we all think about-- we've grown so used to the idea of surveillance that we don't even question it anymore.
Piece you don't like I'm not a fan of Elena Dubas' work in her project, "Written Bodies." One image in particular depicts what appears to be a man's back on the left hand side of the photo and a framed picture of an elephant with a flower lei draped over it towards the middle and right hand side. The man has hooks in his back, with small green apples or some sort of fruit hanging on them. It is a tightly cropped photo.
Why not? I personally find the image disturbing and uncomfortable, to the point that it makes my stomach turn. The pain I see is unsettling. Despite seeing the person's face, the hooks appear as though they must be painful-- especially with that extra weight of the fruit tugging at them. The composition is alright, but not my favorite. The image is sort of split down the middle, which I think detracts from the photo just a bit. Also, the right edge of the framed picture is almost aligned with the edge of the photo, and I think that it would be stronger either further away form the edge or cropped out. With it this way, I find that it almost looks like the photo was shot a little bit crooked, like it was either a mistake or it was supposed to look like that because it was a quick snapshot.
Artist Intent / Message Sheri Lynn Behr's message was clear, but there was also an artist statement to go with the photos. With or without that though, I thought it was evident what the artist's intent was. I think that Elena Dubas' message was also clear, even without the artist statement. Both artists approached the images/subjects well to convey their concepts.

Look I was very I impressed with the lay out of the show this would have been an experience I would have loved to seen this in person. Liam Alexanders Mixed Media posters were so inspiring. One concern I did have was the 8th floor, but after seeing the view I understand why. Handicap people could use the elevator. Lighting was perfect, it wasn't too much just right.

Theme / Description This theme is based on humanity and relationships of individuals and societal level. This is based on Social activism and justice. This sis a group showing that send messages to the viewer to think about how this world truly is and how people are treated. We need to open our eyes and not bury our heads in the sand to what is happening right now.It is not a traveling show.
Timeline September 2015, contemporary
Type of ART Photography, sculpture, installation, video, painting, mixed media artwork.
Class connection? The part of this show that relates to photo one is the photography and how photography can be used to create an impact on our world. It speaks the truths of cultures, and brings attention to what is happening to these cultures, and humanity.
Piece you like My favorite pieces were of Liam Alexander, and his use of mixed media with collage and photography. The posters are so impressive with the texture, color, and technique. The voice of these photos speak loud and clear. Angela Sun was my favorite and what she is trying to do about the plastic in this world. My relationship with nature makes her efforts very important to me. I will be watching her movie, " Plastic Paradise".
What you like Liam Alexander other piece on Guerera Azteca- Mexican Activist for the Mexican Solidarity Movement. I have friends that are Hispanic and I have heard some horror stories. I feel that America is a melting pot and we have no right to tell other people from other countries who want to come here to be free not to come. If they in in danger they should be allowed to be here especially. When they are here treated like an American. I know that there are also many other reasons we need to be careful as the terror threats are continuous. I like how he used the black and white technique with this particular piece with the mask of the half white half black to me is ying and yang...but the 43 students that came missing now have not died in vain. They are remembered in the photograph. It screams for something to be be done.
Piece you don't like Honestly I forgot to right down the title and cannot figure out how to get back to it with out loosing this. But it was the photo of the woman with the toilet blood stain. I understand why the photo was taken, and what she was going through personally, but I am very private and hate to even think about that body function happening. No woman enjoys it and I don't want to see it.
Why not? Still disturbing as mentioned above. Also the photo of the girl in the police station that looked like a hooker...I hate to think people are that desperate. As to walk around and not care what they look like, or care for themselves. These pics of the police station remind me of lost kids...the ones that came up with hard knocks in life. A part of wants to rescue them all and being a school makes me realize the red flags even more. People say we can't ave them all...why not? It just goes to show our system is broken, we fail them at a young age and do not repair them quick enough. It all begins with parenting.
Artist Intent / Message The artist and Pamela's message is to pay attention to what is happening in life right now. How people are being treated and stand up and do something about it. Top show the warriors and the people who are not afraid to do what is right. This show was so well done, messages well received.
Any additional comments about this exercise or form (not required) Paul, I love your work as well. It is very unique something I have never seen before. I would love to learn how to do what you do. The color schemes and the composition is strategically planned and carefully placed. Your own message comes through that war for you left a great impact on you, something you can never forget. The toy soldiers mean to me that your childhood the "innocence" was not killed in this experience you had. But in the same sense as a child when you played toy soldiers, you would never had imagined that experience would be real. I do not wish war on anyone. Although I respect anyone who sacrifices everything for our freedom. I just hate how the government uses and abuses these brave individuals. Very well done, so happy for you and this show.

Look I really like the environment that the pieces were placed in. The gallery looks really nice and it has a nice amount of space to walk through to view those pieces. I would have liked to go to this show and experience walking around the gallery myself, as well as looking at Liam Alexander's work in the windows of the building.

Group Show Names There were many different artists in the gallery portion of the show.
The artists were:
Joan Lobis Brown, Andi Schreiber, Ben Altman, Sheri Lynn Behr, Chelsea Rae Klein, Elena Dubas, Prisoner 2104004158, Serge Hamad, Kameelah Rasheed, Jaime Permuth, Paul Pearce, Gb Kim, Visitor 1014012658, Tina Tian Tang, Yoko Zhi Yang, Susan May Tell, Claire Lieberman, Matt Gunther, Daniella Groza, and Tohil Fidel Brito Bernal.
Theme / Description This show was about two different exhibitions reflecting on themes regarding social justice as well as a single artist focusing on what roles people play in social activism.
Timeline Contemporary, 2014-15
Type of ART The show included a variety of photographs from many different artists. There were also some installations/sculptures in the show from one of the artists.
Class connection? The photographs relate to our class because they are mostly digital images, which is what our class is based on, rather than film or other types of photography.
Piece you like http://www.sherilynnbehr.com/nomatterwhere/

The title of this piece is Chicago.
I couldn't find a date for this image.
What you like I really like the angle from which she took this picture. I like how the buildings are in each corner of the photograph and the surveillance camera is in the middle of all of those buildings. In my opinion this image is very pleasing to look at. I also really like her concept behind the images in this series, being aware of all the different cameras that are around us, but trying to avoid them at the same time.
Piece you don't like http://www.elenadubas.com/new-page/

I couldn't find a title or date of this piece.
Why not? I don't particularly like this image because anyone could take a photo of railroad tracks and call it good. I think if she got down on the ground or closer to the tracks then maybe it would be stronger in my eyes. All the lines going across the frame are making me a little dizzy and confused. I really just think this is a very simple image that anyone could have taken.
Artist Intent / Message Some of the artists I think really got their message across about social justice and social activism, while others I didn't really see the connection between the theme of the show and what the artist displayed.

Look The outside portion with the eleven portraits unique, the way the lighting is displayed on the portraits themselves. It gives them an elegance all on their own, along with they own individual show. Inside of the gallery itself is very timeless, with the white walls and large glass windows, truly brings the whole showing together. The way the pieces are spaced in the gallery from photographs make it look like each artist has their own territory to present their works.

Theme / Description The showing is of a collection of artists, displaying their work dealing with the social aspect of society. It is their collection(s) of work. It is a temporary gallery showing in the City.
Timeline Modern
Type of ART The eleven portraits are of mixed media, ones by Gb Kim of faces are of I believe paintings. Other types are of black room prints, and digital prints. There is also a black marble sculpture too.
Class connection? Portraits of people and how unique they can be to get a message across. Others are incorporating living and nonliving objects to portraits or still-lives to help really bring a message home. Plus, we are all proud of you Paul and your work!
Piece you like http://www.elenadubas.com/writtenbodies/
In the Written Bodies series, I am unable to find the name of it.
The pieces themselves seem recent, as of this year or in 2014.
Skin scarring tattoo work is what I think it is called, it attracts me because of how much pain one would be in, but who this is a new form of tattooing the human body. Transforming the canvas with skin art.
What you like This photograph of this type of art, I myself will not get done, but I cannot take my eyes off it. The beauty behind it but also the pain brings emotions to me that make me feel both sorrow, but also strength, beauty after pain. I also find it neat too that this is becoming something new, but at the same time kind of dangerous.
Piece you don't like http://www.sherilynnbehr.com/watchingyou/
From the Watching You series by Sheri Lynn Behr, I do not find it interesting because of the subject matter does not pique my creative imagination or visual attention. It has a radial aspect which is cool, but something I just do not like
Why not? It's distracting because it's not something you would see everyday, but at the same time I get not emotional draws or sense of creativity from it. May be if there was an incorporation of portraits of people with the eye of those surveillance cameras it would be interesting.
Artist Intent / Message The intent of these artists were all the same, but at the same time different. They all revolved around a specific idea of being social related or to society in some way, whether from several years to modern. This over all gallery was very eye opening and effective to me, because the art itself comes from all very different people with different perspectives of what the theme/ topic is.

Artist Intent / Message They all told stories about topics that are personal and important to the individual artist
