The camera stayed focused on the Gnome for both exposures.
The only changes were aperture and shutter speed.Notice how the depth of field (total area in focus) changes as the f/stop changes.
Deep depth of field f / 8 (small lens opening) In focus from the leaf in the foreground all the way to the branch in back.
Shallow depth of field f / 2 (large lens opening) The foreground leaf and the background go out of focus.
Also notice that the shutter speed had to change to make the equivalent exposure correct when the f/stop was changed.
