Schweinfurth Art Center
Insidious Invasion by Paul W Pearce

Made in NY

Made in NY is the Schweinfurth Art Center’s annual juried exhibit of work made by artists who live in New York State.

This year, there were 561 entries. Jurors selected 81 pieces from 79 artists to be featured in the exhibition. The opening is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023. The exhibit features artworks of all media including painting, photography, fiber art, ceramics, sculpture, and more. This is the 27th year the Art Center has held the exhibit.

My piece was created as part of "The Atlas of Everything" project.
The pages of Russia from this 100 year old atlas were altered to reflect the devastating invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Artist's Statement

Over 100 years ago the "Great World War" ended. It was so brutal it was declared "The War to End All Wars".

Now we are witnessing a brutal war in real time and are powerless to stop it.

Soldiers are sent to pillage, destroy and be slaughtered. We watch as whole towns and cities are decimated. Soldiers commit atrocities while other young men flee their country before they are conscripted and forced to fight an illegal war in a foreign country. I was conscripted and forced to fight an illegal war in a foreign country.

Here we are fighting a civil war - families are split apart, neighbors are the enemy. The battlefield is the screen in your hand or on your wall.

Children are doomed to live in an inhospitable world, where everything and everybody is suspicious.

I question the very nature of civilization. We are slipping backward and are creating more sophisticated ways to be barbaric and inhumane. War is made into games, Games are turned into war.Children are turned into soldiers.
